Cool Indifference

Richard Li

Medium: Color pencils on black paper

Statement: “Cool Indifference” is a fun portrait of my oldest cat. Entertained by the apathetic, above-the-fray personality of cats, I wanted to visually communicate that in my drawing; thus, I leveraged the negative space of the black paper to essentially make the cat, whose name is Shadow, into a dark and cool void on the page. His face is drawn in cool tones—blues and teal greens—contrasting the heavy, overpowering redness of the background sunrise. Nature is screaming “look at me” in all her aesthetic grandiosity, but Shadow simply, amusingly, does not give a care.
