inadequate words, painted memories

Style: Poetry

Statement: I wrote this poem to exemplify how we can't truly define ourselves. No matter how many labels exist, we cannot confine ourselves to them and restrict ourselves. We need to reach beyond the boxes we have been placed in and live our best lives.

cursor blinking

black and white

e m e r g e n c y

piecing together my life

puzzle pieces stuck together

how do I put them together

if they’re all from different sets

how do I define myself

as words on paper?

my life, my persona, my entire being

based on memories

the fond, the disturbing

the hearty chuckles, salty tears

I’ve been on a journey

but it’s not over

my bucket list gradually filling with checks

but what’s worth writing down?

what should I say?

the salvage music has provided me?

how I delve into different worlds each day through novels?

does that seem pretentious?

I’m just trying to make my way

faced with numerous obstacles

but I just want to be me

how can I define myself using only words

when I am so much more
